Hair Removal With Sugar

The hair removal process does not need to be excruciatingly expensive process. After all, even before all these chemical epilators, laser treatments and electrolysis treatments became en vogue, people have been utilizing the sugaring methods for ages. Even back then, people prefer sugaring to waxing, because the former is less painful. The sugar paste for this hair removal method usually only attaches itself to the body hair, and not the skin which causes minimal damage. Waxing, on the other hand, can become very painful because the wax attaches itself to both the skin and the hair. So this latter method can become painful when skin is accidentally ripped off with the hairs.

These days, there are so many sugar pastes available for sugaring - and some of them are unbelievable expensive. Although there are some with "special" flavors like fruit based sugaring paste, the end result is the practically the same. After all, these products are for the removal of unwanted hair, and not for eating. If you would like to try the sugaring method without all the dollars flying by, you can simply make your own homemade body sugar. This is fairly easy, but would need a bit of supervision during the cooking process so that it comes out with the right consistency. Two things you do have to remember though: the correct substrate, and the correct temperature.

Substrate means that actual ingredients for the paste that you will use: the most common are honey, lemon juice, molasses and table sugar. Temperature means you need to cook these at the right melting point so that it becomes liquid but pliant. You need this to reach a consistency similar to a thick glob of maple syrup. Also, it is essential the sugar paste is at room temperature so that you do not burn yourself during the actual sugaring process. At the same time, the paste does not cool off and become hard candy.

The easiest recipe for home body sugar is this:

  • 1 cup of white sugar
  • Juice from half a lemon or 3 tbsps.
  • ΒΌ cup of honey
  • 1 tbsp. of molasses

Simply combine all ingredients and heat them in the microwave for 2 to 3 minutes or until it bubbles. Once it starts to bubble, remove it from the oven and mix gently. The consistency has to be smooth but very thick. If this consistency is not yet thick maple syrup like, simply return the mixture in the microwave and heat for another 30 seconds to 1 minute. Mix. Check the consistency again. Return inside the microwave if necessary. And then let the sugar paste cool down before actually using.

If you would prefer using a pan on a conventional stove, mix the same ingredients and place over low heat. Let the mixture simmer for 5 to 10 minutes after boiling and check to see if the right consistency has been achieved. If you want to speed up this process considerably, try replacing the molasses with 1 tsp. of cornstarch (which should be combined with the lemon juice until fully incorporated.)

If you want something a bit fancier, try replacing the lemon juice with any other freshly squeezed fruit. Oranges and grapefruits are always great substitutes. Strawberries make great body wax too, but you would need to puree these and strain before you can get the same amount of juice.
