What is Voluntary Trepanation?

Trepanation is the practice of boring a hole into the skull to relieve pressure. There is a medical reason that this procedure can be performed. But many people use this practice as a way to enhance their brain function and reduce the amount of blood volume in the head. Although there is no evidence that this practice actually does any good for the patient, many people still volunteer to have the procedure done for them.

The procedure can be traced back to prehistoric times. Archaeologists have found evidence in human skulls that the procedure had taken place. They can further tell that the patients have appeared to have lived through the procedure and gone on for a period of time after. This is probably one of the oldest surgical procedures that have ever been practiced.

It is still used in modern times to relieve pressure on the brain when there has been an injury. It is used in emergency situations. The patients who undergo the procedure today are in danger of permanent brain damage or even death if the procedure is not done. It is also used to allow the surgeon to perform another surgical procedure on the brain. The boring is done to allow the doctor to have access to the area of the brain that must be treated.

Patients who volunteer for trepanation today are looking for relief from some psychological condition and hope that the release of blood volume from the skull will aid in their treatment. Some cases of voluntary trepanation are done to treat depression and other mental disorders. There is no evidence to support the claims of the practitioners of this surgical procedure.

If you are suffering from a mental disorder or looking into trepanation for your brain function, make certain that you do some research. Of course, you should discuss this procedure with your doctor to determine if you are healthy enough to undergo the procedure. Your doctor might also be able to give you some information on the procedure and what you should expect. Be prepared for your doctor to recommend that you don't use this procedure without a medical need.

The bottom line on voluntary trepanation is that you should do a great deal of research before you decide on having it done. Keep in mind that the medical evidence does not back up the claims of practitioners who conduct this procedure on volunteer patients.
