Sinusitis - 5 Simple Tips to Help Prevent Sinus Infections - Nurse's Guide

If you suffer from occasional acute sinus infections or from chronic sinus infections - infections that run for weeks or even months at a time, it may help you to know what you can do to help prevent sinus infections or other types of sinusitis from happening. Some people are not aware of what is causing their sinus infection or sinusitis. Some people have a difficult time determining if it's really an infection. But for the purpose of this article let's say you know you're having sinus infections either occasionally or often.

If you're having them regularly you may be exposing yourself to something you're not aware of. Take a look at these tips and see if any of them could be the culprit in causing your sinus infections.

1. Pollen can cause sinus infections. Not only can pollen swell the nasal passages but particles can actually get into the sinus cavities and wreak havoc there causing excess drainage and a blockage from the swelling of the lining. Avoid pollen.

2. Smoke from first, second or third-hand sources. Let's hope you don't smoke or have a smoker in the house because smoke can really cause your sinuses to swell. Many smokers have chronic sinusitis and chronic sinus problems including ongoing sinus infections. Avoid smoke.

3. Particles in the air in your house and car can get into the nasal passages and up into the sinus cavities. The blockage will cause drainage down the back of your throat and other sinus symptoms and you could end up with a serious sinus infection. In your house you want to make sure to air out your bedroom and the rooms in the house as much as possible. Make sure to get rid of any mold since most sinus infections are caused by fungi. It can hide in bathrooms so look closely and no plants in the bedroom, where mold can be present also.

In your car you can use the air conditioner, but avoid the first blast when you turn it on in case it's carrying dust and other particles into the air. If it's pollen time then keep the car windows closed.

4. Avoid pressure. When you change altitude while flying be prepared for a change in air pressure and be aware of how it affects you. Also airplanes may not have the cleanest air. If you swim or dive the pressure may affect your sinuses also.

5. You can carry saline nasal spray and spray your nasal passages but the spray may not reach up into your sinuses. Drink lots of water so your sinuses are adequately hydrated.

These are just a few of the tips that can help you prevent sinus infections or other types of sinusitis. You don't have to suffer with sinus infections once you know what to look for and how to prevent them.
