Acai Berry - Health Or Hazard?

If you are trying to lose weight, you have definitely heard of the Acai (pronounced "ah-sigh-ee") Berry. This is the 'super fruit' that is currently all the rage. Unfortunately, there is a lot of doubt about it now as it is being linked to heart issues and several other areas of our health. What is the actual truth and is this fruit as wonderful as some claim it to be?

If you want to pick Acai Berries, you are going to have to travel to The Rain Forest to do so. This is where this fruit is grown and has been done so for hundreds of years. In fact, the locales have been consuming it there for just as long with no issues. The fruit itself is mostly seed though (about 90%) and when harvested, is pressed and turned into a puree.

The huge draw for the Acai Berry is the fact that it is so rich in antioxidants. Before this berry came along, the blueberry was believed to have the highest content, now here comes the new kid on the block that has a ratio of about 5:1 to the blueberry. You can now figure out how it got its nickname as the 'super fruit'.

If you are still confused as to why it gets this tag, it is because antioxidants are linked to positive health. We are preached to time and again to have a diet that is high in antioxidants because they benefit us in so many ways. That being the case, the Acai Berry will help you with your immune system, energy and stamina, cancer, heart disease and weight loss. As wonderful as all those other benefits are, it is the obsession with weight loss that has made this little wonder famous.

As it has been proven to help in aiding against obesity, it has become the most popular fruit on the planet. Unfortunately, this is also where the fruit got its bad reputation. You see, most dietary supplements these days not only feature Acai extract, they also feature Guarana. Now Guarana has been proven to be a risk for those with heart conditions and has been directly linked to supplements that were taken prior to some big name athletes having massive heart attacks. The Acai however had nothing to do with that. On its own, this fruit has only positive side effects, there is no danger at all associated to it. If you are falling into the latest fad and taking a supplement, make sure you read the label and that is Guarana free. Take all the Acai you want and watch your health soar!
